Spoor's AI bird-monitoring software is becoming increasingly popular

Norway-based startup Spoor, founded in 2021, is gaining traction with its computer vision software designed to reduce the impact of wind turbines on bird populations by tracking and identifying birds and migration patterns in real time.

The company’s technology, which works with off-the-shelf high-resolution cameras, can now detect birds within a 2.5-kilometer radius and identify species with about 96% accuracy, a significant improvement since its 2024 seed round.

Used by more than 20 major energy companies across three continents, Spoor’s system allows wind farm operators to better plan turbine locations and temporarily slow or halt operations during heavy migration periods to meet tightening regulatory requirements.

Interest in the technology is also expanding beyond wind energy to sectors such as airports, aquaculture, and mining, including a partnership with Rio Tinto to track bats.

Spoor recently raised an €8 million ($9.3 million) Series A round led by SET Ventures, as it looks to cement its position as a global leader in helping industry and nature coexist amid growing regulatory pressure on renewable energy projects.
