YouTube Introduces AI-Powered ‘Ask YouTube’ Search and Brings Gemini Omni to Shorts
YouTube is significantly expanding its artificial intelligence capabilities with the launch of a new conversational search experience called “Ask YouTube” and deeper integration of Google’s Gemini Omni AI video technology into YouTube Shorts and creator tools.
The update reflects Google’s broader strategy of embedding AI across its entire ecosystem, transforming how users search, discover, and create digital content.
The newly introduced “Ask YouTube” feature is designed to make video search more interactive and conversational. Instead of relying only on simple keyword searches, users can now ask detailed, natural-language questions directly within YouTube.
According to the company, users can search for complex topics such as parenting advice, creator recommendations, tutorials, gaming suggestions, or educational content using conversational prompts. The AI system can also handle follow-up questions, helping users refine results in a more personalized and intuitive way.
For example, a user searching for children’s bicycle training tips could continue asking related questions until the AI narrows down the most relevant videos. The feature combines results from both YouTube Shorts and traditional long-form videos while generating AI-powered summaries and recommendations.
Initially, “Ask YouTube” is being made available to Premium subscribers in the United States through YouTube’s experimental feature testing program on desktop devices.
The launch signals another major step in the evolution of online search, where traditional keyword-based discovery is increasingly being replaced by conversational AI interfaces capable of understanding user intent more deeply.
In addition to AI search, YouTube announced that it is bringing Gemini Omni — Google’s latest AI video generation and editing model — into YouTube Shorts Remix and the YouTube Create application.
The integration will allow creators to use advanced AI-powered video editing, storytelling, and remixing tools directly inside YouTube’s content ecosystem.
According to YouTube, Gemini Omni improves how AI interprets user prompts and creative intent, enabling more consistent video generation, smoother editing workflows, and more sophisticated audio and visual adjustments behind the scenes.
The company says the technology will help creators experiment with new forms of storytelling and collaborative content creation while simplifying complex editing tasks that previously required professional software expertise.
The rollout comes at a time when AI-generated video content is rapidly becoming one of the biggest battlegrounds in the technology industry. Major companies are investing heavily in generative AI systems capable of producing realistic videos, animations, voiceovers, and visual effects from simple text instructions.
However, consumer response to AI-generated short-form content has been mixed. Some platforms have struggled to balance creativity, authenticity, and concerns about spam, misinformation, and low-quality AI content.
OpenAI previously experimented with AI-generated social video experiences connected to Sora, while Meta has also introduced AI-generated tools for social media platforms. Industry observers note that YouTube appears to be taking a more gradual and integrated approach rather than placing AI-generated content at the center of the user experience immediately.
Alongside creative AI tools, YouTube is also expanding safeguards against misuse of generative AI.
The company announced broader availability of its likeness-detection system, which helps creators identify and report AI-generated videos that misuse their appearance or identity. The tool is now being expanded to creators aged 18 and older.
The technology is intended to combat the growing threat of deepfakes and unauthorized AI-generated impersonations. If creators discover misleading or manipulated AI content featuring their likeness, they can request removal through YouTube’s reporting systems.
As AI-generated video becomes more advanced and accessible, platforms across the industry are facing increasing pressure to balance innovation with safety, creator rights, and content authenticity.
The latest announcements demonstrate how YouTube is positioning itself for a future where artificial intelligence becomes deeply embedded into every stage of the content experience — from search and discovery to editing, storytelling, personalization, and creator protection.
With conversational AI search, AI-assisted video creation, and deepfake detection tools now expanding together, YouTube is signaling that the next phase of online video will be increasingly powered by intelligent, interactive AI systems.
