IIT Kanpur Alumni Commit Rs 100 Crore to Launch New School on Technology and Society
Senior entrepreneurs and founders from IIT Kanpur’s Class of 2000 have pledged Rs 100 crore to set up a new institution called the Millennium School of Technology and Society (MSTAS) at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur.
The group includes well-known startup founders such as Naveen Tewari (InMobi and Glance), Amit Kumar Agarwal (NoBroker), and Amit Gupta (Yulu), along with their batchmates. The new school will focus on the intersection of technology, policy, ethics, and social impact, and will support interdisciplinary learning and leadership development alongside IIT Kanpur’s core engineering and science programmes.
Naveen Tewari has personally committed Rs 30 crore towards the initiative. Speaking about the contribution, he said the move is a way for the batch to give back to their alma mater, which helped shape their thinking, values, and ambition.
The Class of 2000, also known as the Millennium Batch, is among IIT Kanpur’s most successful alumni groups. Its members have founded or co-founded several major companies including InMobi, Glance, NoBroker, Knowlarity, Card91, Cohesity, and Martini, while some were early employees at WhatsApp. Alumni from the batch also hold senior leadership roles at global companies such as Nvidia, Microsoft, Amazon, Intel, BCG, Morgan Stanley, and GIC.
The announcement was made during the batch’s silver jubilee reunion. IIT Kanpur said the new school reflects a growing focus on building institutions that can address complex social and ethical challenges arising from rapid technological change.
The move follows a broader trend among leading institutes. Earlier this year, IIT Madras launched a Rs 200-crore alumni-funded initiative to support early-stage startups emerging from the campus.
