Iran-Israel war: Amidst Iran strikes, an Amazon cloud unit reports problems at data centers in Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates
Dubai: Amazon Web Services (AWS), the cloud computing arm of Amazon, said on Monday that its data centres in Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates were facing connectivity issues, as tensions escalated in the Gulf following retaliatory Iranian strikes in the region.
The disruption comes amid Iranian attacks targeting airports, ports and residential areas across the wider Gulf in response to U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran.
AWS said one of its availability zones in the UAE remained without power after “objects” struck the data centre, causing sparks and a fire. While the company reported partial recovery in the UAE region, it advised customers to use alternate regions as it investigates “additional connectivity issues and error rates.”
Amazon did not confirm whether the UAE data centre incident was directly linked to the Iranian strikes when asked earlier. The company also did not provide a reason for the connectivity problems at its Bahrain data centre and did not respond to a Reuters request for further comment.
The outage highlights the vulnerability of critical digital infrastructure in geopolitically sensitive regions, as cloud providers increasingly underpin essential services for businesses and governments worldwide.
