A union in Australia wants to speak with WiseTech immediately about AI-driven job losses
An Australian trade union has asked for an urgent meeting with WiseTech Global after the company announced plans to cut around 2,000 jobs as part of a two-year restructuring linked to artificial intelligence (AI).
The union, Professionals Australia, represents technology and engineering workers. It said WiseTech must consult employees and the union before making major workplace changes.
The union has asked the company to provide written details explaining:
-
How the new AI systems will be introduced
-
How they will affect jobs
-
What steps will be taken to avoid or reduce job losses
Sydney-based WiseTech develops shipping and logistics management software. On Wednesday, the company said it plans to integrate AI into both its customer-facing software and internal operations.
The restructuring is expected to impact about 29% of its global workforce — around 2,000 employees out of roughly 7,000 staff across 40 countries.
Paul Inglis, Director of Professionals Australia, said introducing AI on such a large scale is a major workplace change. He stressed that the company must be transparent about the number of job cuts and seriously consider alternatives such as redeployment and retraining of staff.
