300 illicit gaming and betting websites and applications have been shut by the government

The Government of India has intensified its crackdown on illegal online gambling and betting platforms, blocking around 300 websites and mobile applications in a fresh round of enforcement, according to sources. These platforms were primarily involved in activities such as online sports betting, casino-style games including slots and roulette, live dealer setups, and betting exchanges that operate like peer-to-peer gambling marketplaces.

Authorities have also targeted traditional gambling networks that have moved online, including satta and matka operations, along with apps offering real-money card and casino games. The action reflects growing concern over the rapid spread of such platforms, many of which operate without proper regulation and pose risks related to financial fraud, addiction, and money laundering.

This latest move is part of a broader and ongoing effort by the government to curb illegal online gaming and betting activities. In total, nearly 8,400 such websites and apps have been blocked so far. A significant portion of these—around 4,900 platforms—were taken down after the implementation of the Online Gaming Act, which strengthened the regulatory framework around online gaming and enabled stricter enforcement against unlawful operators.
