ChatGPT Introduces Teen-Focused Experience With Stronger Safety and Learning Tools
ChatGPT is expanding its approach to younger users with a dedicated teen experience designed to combine artificial intelligence with stronger safety protections and learning-focused features. The new experience is intended for users under 18 and introduces additional safeguards around sensitive content while giving teenagers tools that can help them use AI more effectively for education, creativity and everyday questions.
A major part of the teen experience is Study Mode, which is designed to encourage students to understand problems instead of simply receiving an answer. The feature can guide teenagers through questions step by step, provide hints, explain difficult concepts and help them reflect on their answers. It can also be used to create practice questions, quizzes and other learning activities that allow students to test their understanding.
Study Mode is particularly relevant for homework and academic preparation because it encourages an interactive approach to learning. Instead of immediately completing an assignment, ChatGPT can guide students through the reasoning process and help them identify where they may have made mistakes. OpenAI says Study Mode was developed with input from teachers, learning scientists and education experts to encourage deeper engagement with learning.
Parents and guardians can also connect their accounts to a teenager’s ChatGPT account through parental controls. Once accounts are linked, parents can manage selected settings designed to create a more age-appropriate experience. These controls can include quiet hours, voice mode, image generation, memory, model improvement settings and whether new conversations should start with Study Mode enabled.
An important privacy aspect of the system is that parental controls do not provide parents with access to their teenager’s conversations. Parents can manage selected features and settings, but they cannot use the controls to read or continuously monitor chat history. In limited high-risk situations, OpenAI may send a safety notification to a linked parent or guardian with information intended to help support the teenager.
The teen experience also includes additional safeguards for sensitive topics. These protections are designed to reduce exposure to graphic violence, risky viral challenges, sexual or violent roleplay and content associated with extreme beauty standards, unhealthy dieting or body shaming. The safeguards are enabled by default for accounts using the teen experience.
Age detection plays an important role in determining which experience an account receives. ChatGPT can use signals associated with account activity to predict whether a user may be under 18. If the system determines that an account may belong to a teenager, additional protections can be applied even if the user previously entered a date of birth. Users who are 18 or older and are incorrectly placed in the teen experience can complete an age-verification process to request removal of the additional protections.
The system is also designed to change when a teen becomes an adult. When an account is identified as belonging to someone who is 18 or older, the teen protections can be removed and the account holder receives access to adult settings and features. If parental controls were linked, that connection ends as part of the transition.
Another important feature is Quiet Hours, which allows ChatGPT access to be restricted during selected periods. Parents can use this setting to create boundaries around when their teenager can use the service. Study Mode can also be configured through parental controls so that new main ChatGPT conversations begin with the learning-focused experience enabled.
The expansion reflects the growing role of artificial intelligence in education and everyday digital activities. Teenagers are increasingly using AI tools for research, writing, studying, brainstorming, coding and creative projects. Providing age-appropriate safeguards while encouraging responsible use could help make these tools more useful for younger users without treating AI as a replacement for teachers, parents or real-world support.
At the same time, AI safety systems are not designed to replace communication between teenagers and trusted adults. Responsible AI use still depends on understanding the limitations of AI-generated information, checking important answers and maintaining healthy boundaries around technology use.
With stronger content safeguards, learning tools, parental controls and age-based protections, the teen experience represents a broader effort to make AI more suitable for younger users. As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly integrated into education and daily life, features that prioritize learning, safety and responsible use could play an important role in shaping how the next generation interacts with AI.
