AI coding startup Cursor plans new model to rival Anthropic, OpenAI

Cursor, a fast-growing artificial intelligence startup focused on software development, is preparing to launch a new AI model called Composer 2, aimed at improving efficiency and competing with larger players in the AI space.

The San Francisco-based company announced that Composer 2 will function as an advanced AI agent capable of handling complex and lengthy coding tasks on behalf of developers. This marks a step forward from traditional AI coding assistants, as the new system is designed to not just generate code snippets but also execute broader development workflows.

Cursor, which launched its first AI coding assistant in 2023, quickly gained traction among professional developers and contributed to the rise of a new programming approach often referred to as “vibe coding.” The company now reports over 1 million daily users, including around 50,000 businesses such as Stripe and Figma.

With its rapid growth, Cursor is also attracting strong investor interest. According to reports, the startup is in discussions to raise new funding at a valuation of around $50 billion, highlighting confidence in the future of AI-driven software development tools.

However, the competition in this space is intensifying. Major AI firms like OpenAI and Anthropic are also rolling out increasingly powerful models that can handle more complex programming tasks. These companies are investing heavily to build AI systems that go beyond simple assistance and can act as autonomous agents in software development.

Unlike its larger competitors, Cursor is taking a more focused approach. Its cofounder, Aman Sanger, said that Composer 2 has been trained exclusively on coding-related data. This specialization allows the company to build a smaller and more cost-efficient model compared to broader AI systems that are designed for multiple use cases.

Sanger emphasized that Cursor’s model is intentionally limited to coding tasks, meaning it will not perform general-purpose activities such as writing essays, poetry, or handling unrelated queries. This narrow focus is expected to improve performance and reliability for developers while keeping operational costs lower.

Cursor’s platform also supports multiple AI models, including those developed by OpenAI and Anthropic, and notably, OpenAI itself is an investor in the company. This creates an interesting dynamic where Cursor both collaborates with and competes against some of the biggest names in the AI industry.

The launch of Composer 2 reflects a broader trend in the AI sector, where companies are moving toward specialized AI agents designed for specific industries or tasks.
